Former Briarcliff Resident Burt Erickson Passes Away at 100

Burt Erickson, 100 years young, formerly of Briarcliff Manor and Chicago, IL, passed away peacefully on Oct. 23, 2023 at the Veteran’s Association Nursing Home in Montrose, where he received wonderful care.

Burt was born on March 8, 1923 in Chicago, the son of Frances and Burton Erickson. He was the oldest of three children. He was predeceased in death by his sister Gertrude “Trudie” Hodges and his brother Jerome “Jerry” Erickson.

Burt married the love of his life Rita Marie Jerome on Dec. 27, 1952. They were married 61 years until her death on April 17, 2014. Burt is survived by his daughter, Lynn (Brendan) Malley of Cortlandt Manor; son, Burt Erickson (Bevin) of Charlotte, NC; and his four grandchildren, Luke and Caitlin Malley and Elizabeth and Thomas Erickson.

Burt served in the United States Army from January 1943 to March 1946, earning the rank of Sergeant. Prior to the service, Burt attended Wright Junior College for a year where he studied physics and mathematics and participated in intercollegiate boxing. 

After the service Burt enrolled in Depaul University, where he met Rita in a Shakespeare class. He graduated in 1953 with a Bachelor of Science degree.

Burt began his career at Continental Can in Chicago before being transferred to New York where his role took him all over the world, including Egypt, Iran, and throughout Europe. After that he spent many years at Technicon in Tarrytown.

Burt loved coaching his kids' soccer teams and was an avid tennis player, jogger, reader, and skier. He and Rita loved spending time together and with the family in Lake Placid. 

Our Dad was a special man and a fantastic father. We will miss him.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28, 2023 at Darrow Church of Christ near Sheldon, IL. Pastor Aaron Burnett will officiate. Burial will follow at Sheldon Cemetery.
